against Pandurii Targu-Jiu

Swansea struck decisively on 52 minutes when Routledge tapped home at the far post and, after the goal, Swansea finally enjoyed some semblance of control. However, they almost had a rude awakening when Karanovic's replacement Alhassane Keita beautifully brought down a long ball and lofted over Tremmel, but also over the bar. At the other end substitute Alvaro Vazquez, on for Bony, almost doubled Swansea's lead with his first contribution, racing clear but curling just wide. Lopar then saved brilliantly from Dyer, before Swansea saw out a nervy final 10 minutes, with Netar striking the post from distance, to make it two wins from two ahead of a home game against Kuban Krasnodar later this month.
Roberto Martinez, the man who led the Latics to their unlikely FA Cup triumph last season, watched on from the directors' box as his former side made another piece of history. The hosts should have been out of sight before Maribor captain Tavares pulled a goal back on the hour mark. Jean-Philippe Mendy forced his way into the area and Tavares was on hand to score past Scott Carson. Powell then had two further chances to finish the game off but hit the post with one from two yards and then couldn't quite convert a cross minutes later. Powell did have the final word though, skipping past two Maribor defenders in stoppage time before hammering low past Handanovic. The result left Wigan well positioned on four points in Group D, two behind Rubin Kazan, who hammered Zulte 4-0 earlier on Thursday and who the Latics play home and away next.
Rui Miguel's strike early in the second half saved Pacos Ferreira's blushes in a 1-1 draw against Pandurii Targu-Jiu in Europa League Group E. Last season's runners-up in the Romanian Liga I took a fifth-minute lead through Marko Momcilovic's close-range finish. But Miguel spared the Portuguese side's blushes four minutes after half-time to ensure Pacos and Pandurii each got their first point in Group E after being defeated by Fiorentina and Dnipro respectively in their opening matches. The visitors came flying out of the traps with Alexandru Ciucur's effort from just outside the area blocked by Filipe Anunciacao and from the resulting corner, they took a fifth-minute lead. Nicandro Breeveld's inswinging set-piece from the right allowed Momcilovic to fire into the top corner from close range. It was Pandurii's first goal in the group although they were nearly back on level terms almost immediately, with Rui Caetano guilty of missing the target from Manuel Jose's free-kick into the area. Defender Gregory Arnolin then saw a header well saved by Pandurii goalkeeper Joao Mingote, while Deividas Matulevicius had to make a vital block from on-loan Manchester United striker Bebe's effort from close range. At the other end, Arnolin made a vital interception to keep out a header from Eric Pereira, whose header just after half-time was well saved by Antonio Filipe. It proved a crucial save as Miguel levelled in the 49th minute after slotting home from close range following Jean Seri's lay-off. Bebe wasted an opportunity to put the hosts ahead after shooting straight at Joao Mingote a few minutes later although Pandurii were still proving an attacking threat with Tiago Valente making key blocks from Ciucur and goalscorer Momcilovic. Jose fired wide from inside the area and Paolo Hurtado fired over from 20 yards but it was Pandurii who finished strongly although they could not fashion any chances to reflect their superiority and both sides settled for a point.

Happy with his in-from striker

"It was because the opponent played well, not because we dropped off that they were better in the second half. They got some chances to score so it was difficult." Joe Bryan, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Bobby Reid and Stephen McLaughlin all threatened to level for the west country outfit, who dominated for large spells of the second period. It was a performance that belied their lowly league position and one which manager Sean O'Driscoll enjoyed. "I am pleased with the way the players performed, pleased with the way we approached the game," he said. "We got stronger as the game went on, which is pleasing. "We came to terms with their possession, which you expect when you play a top team." Sean Dyche is happy to get "bored" of waxing lyrical about in-form Danny Ings after his side's 2-1 Capital One Cup third round win over Nottingham Forest After Matt Derbyshire's close-range strike gave Nottingham Forest the lead, Ings came to the fore with a pair of fantastic goals to give the Clarets a 2-1 win. The first involved the 21-year-old pivoting and rifling home a half volley in one swift move while the second saw the ex-Bournemouth forward cleverly head home a near-post free-kick. Ings has now bagged nine goals already this season and four in this competition, which meant Dyche had no problems again fielding questions about his free-scoring number 10. He said: "I mention it every week and I'm getting bored of saying it myself, but in a good way, because he's enjoying his football, you can see it. "He's got that nice energy and we know he's got quality."
Steve Holland was delighted with Juan Mata's performance as Chelsea overcame Mark Cooper's dogged Swindon Town outfit in the third round of the Capital One Cup. Mata was returned to the Blues' starting XI in midweek after being left out of Jose Mourinho's matchday squad for the derby date with Fulham on Saturday. Mourinho has challenged the Spanish forward to tweak his game and prove that he can become an influential figure for the Stamford Bridge outfit once more. Assistant coach Holland feels Mata did everything asked of him at the County Ground, with Fernando Torres' opening goal coming from a low shot he saw parried by Wes Foderingham. "Obviously a lot has been made of the Mata situation because he's a high-profile player," said Holland, who also revealed Marco van Ginkel suffered a potentially serious knee injury and Ramires a hip problem. "The message to all of our attacking players from Jose from day one has been they need to contribute offensively in terms of their production and of course they have to contribute out of possession and defend. The Clarets have not lost at Turf Moor since March and have won each of their last 10 League Cup ties at home, leaving Dyche excited about the impact of another cup run both on and off the field. "It was an important game for different reasons," he added. "A lot's been made of us balancing the books and that might help if a big one gets pulled out of the hat. "It's a win-win now. You want to play well and you want to win a game. You might get a few quid, you might pull someone not as big - then you win that and you go through to the next round. I felt it was an important game for those reasons." Forest boss Billy Davies again made 11 changes, just as he did in the previous round, and was pleased his much-changed outfit were only narrowly defeated by a strong Burnley side.

Heavy praise for Brighton

"Being forced to retire came as a massive shock," Hibbert told Sky Sports. "It was really tough to take at the time and still is now. "I see myself going into coaching or management as I was forced to retire so young" "But I am looking forward now and I am thankful to Wayne [Evans] and Shrewsbury for giving me the chance to coach their youth side. "I am working with the strikers and it is great to get involved in Wayne's sessions. "Wayne has a great record at helping bring through young players like Jon Taylor, Connor Goldson, Tom Bradshaw and Kaiman Anderson and it is great for my education to learn from him. "He is a really good bloke to work under and he has been a big help to me so far. "I see myself going into coaching or management as I was forced to retire so young. "I have started coaching young as I see that as the next step in my career and I have just started taking my UEFA B Licence." Hibbert played under the likes of Billy Davies and Darren Ferguson during his career and he believes he has learned a lot from his former managers that he can take on board for his own future coaching ambitions. "I have been fortunate enough to play under some very good managers during my career and that can only help me in my career," added Hibbert. "Having worked with the likes of Billy Davies and Darren Ferguson I can take forward some of their ways of working and use them in my own style of coaching. "I have a long way to go, but I am determined to do everything I can to learn and improve."
Brighton boss Oscar Garcia is delighted to see the club's youngsters coming to the fore to help out his injury-hit side. Teenager Jake Forster-Caskey and fellow midfielder Rohan Ince, 20, have been thrown in at the deep end this season with the Seagulls missing key players like Liam Bridcutt, Andrea Orlandi and Craig Mackail-Smith. Despite the casualty list Brighton are unbeaten in six matches and rose to 10th in the table after Saturday's 3-1 win over Bolton. "Our mental strength is a positive because when you have many injuries you have to be strong," said Garcia. "All of the players worked very hard and I am very proud of them. "We have played better this season, but it is tough to have three games in seven days in this division. We could not rotate the players because we do not have the fit options, and for that reason we had four young players on the bench. "The injuries have allowed young players like Rohan Ince and Jake Forster-Caskey to get many minutes on the pitch and they have helped us a lot in this situation." Portsmouth boss Guy Whittingham is confident his misfiring side will turn their poor home form around. Pompey, the pre-season favourites for promotion, have so far managed just one win at Fratton Park while losing to Oxford, Chesterfield and Saturday's opponents Fleetwood. Town's winner had a touch of fortune about if after Jamille Matt's shot was well saved by John Sullivan only for the ball to bounce off Sonny Bradley and into the net. Nevertheless, Whittingham is expecting a big improvement in upcoming home games against Rochdale, Bury and Wycombe. He said: "We've had players sent off in two of those games and then conceded because of a ricochet in the other. "We've now played the top three teams here, but we've got some good home games coming up and we've got a good chance of winning them."

Defoe exchanged passes

Valencia were the Group A favourites and the top seed in the tournament, but Laudrup does not believe his side are now the favourites to win the group despite their convincing win in Spain. "It sets us up for the next five games," he said. "No-one expected us to get three points in Valencia and now we have the next two games at home. "If we don't win the next game at home we're back where we started, but we can be happy today about this great result. "I don't know whether we are favourites, I wouldn't say so after one game. Not many expected this but it is only one result out of six." Laudrup, who steered the Swans to Capital One Cup glory last season, added: "I have only been here for 15 months so others can say where this ranks in the club's history, but it is a fantastic evening and fantastic result. "I've had some great nights as a manager, it's difficult to take in because this has only just happened. "But I am so pleased for everybody because now they know they can play against the biggest clubs in the biggest stadiums without any problem and that's great to see. "There were lots of our fans here. I think they had a great night, one of those to remember, this experience is great for them." Laudrup also expressed some sympathy for opposite number Miroslav Djukic, and admitted the decision to send Rami off was not clear-cut. "He will feel bad, I am a coach and I understand how he feels but these things can happen at a big club and he has to stay strong," he said. "It was difficult with the red card because Bony is going towards goal and Rami is the last man, but there is a player coming in from the side.
"I think some referees would give a red card and others not, but he brought the red card out immediately so he had no doubt." The result piles the pressure on Djukic, although many of the complaints of the Valencia fans - some of whom left their seats for 10 minutes of the second half and then protested further outside the ground after the game - were directed as much at his players as at the Serbian himself. He said: "We wanted to improve on our defeat at Betis, but it was very difficult with the red card after 10 minutes. "We were anxious without the ball and we have to keep working and trying to do better. "I am the same as the players. I am responsible for the situation, it is not just about the players. The performance was not good enough but it is the same for everyone." Tromso looked every inch the whipping boys of Group K as they failed to get out of their own half. Everything was going perfectly for Spurs until the 35th minute when Rose unexpectedly pulled up with an injury to his right leg and hobbled off. Substitute Jan Vertonghen slotted in perfectly at left-back and Spurs continued to control the game. Defoe and Holtby exchanged passes before finding Sigurdsson in the box, but the Icelandic midfielder dragged his shot wide. Drage shot high and wide in Tromso's first effort on goal while Holtby smacked a 25-yard shot just wide in injury time. Villas-Boas' injury problems continued to mount after the restart when substitute Johnsen kicked out at Dembele's standing leg while the Belgian was shielding the ball. Dembele collapsed on the floor, writhing in pain and he had to be carried off on a stretcher clutching his right leg. Johnsen entered the book and Eriksen came on for the Belgian. Sandro almost scored a rare goal with 20 minutes to go, but Sahlman was equal to the Brazilian's header. Villas-Boas brought on Paulinho for Lewis Holtby, who received a warm round of applause. More injury problems followed for Villas-Boas as Kaboul waved to the bench after suffering an injury, but he had to stay on for a while as Tottenham had used all three substitutions. Lamela's slip allowed Morten Moldskred to break down the right on a rare Tromso attack, but the Argentinian recovered to deny the winger.

Delighted to move to Stoke

Marko Arnautovic has revealed that Mark Hughes was key to his decision to join Stoke City from Werder Bremen this summer. The Austrian forward is in contention to make his debut against Manchester City on Saturday and is relishing the prospect of playing in the Premier League. Arnautovic is determined to make an impact and repay the faith shown in him by Hughes after the manager made a positive impression on him the first time they met in Germany. "The trainer gave me a very good feeling about the club when he came over to Germany to speak to me," Arnautovic told The Sentinel. "He said many good things and made Stoke City a very good option for me. "I am really happy to be here and I have to thank the club for giving me this opportunity to come here and play in the Premier League. "I hope that I can pay them back for the faith they have in me with good performances." While Arnautovic hopes to feature against Man City, he would understand if Hughes decided to ease him in with a substitute appearance. He said: "It's a great game to start with because they are a very big team with many world class players, and if the manager decides to play me that would be great. But if not, that is no problem." The 24-year-old added: "I don't like talking about myself as a player, but I am a technical player and I feel that I will fit in very well with the very good players who are already here, and with the style of play that the coach likes to use."
Blaise Matuidi bundled the defending champions ahead on the half-hour mark before Lucas Moura sealed the win in the 64th minute. The result lifted PSG one point above Monaco, who play Lorient on Sunday. There was little action of note in the first half until Matuidi broke the deadlock in the 30th minute. Zlatan Ibrahimovic played in the midfielder, who pulled the trigger from close range. Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso went down to block the ball but it slipped underneath him, with Matuidi winning the race to stab home the loose ball. Bordeaux went close just before the half-time whistle when Diego Rolan teed up Ludovic Obraniak on the edge of the box. He took his time to shoot but PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu was up to the test and saved at full stretch before gathering the loose ball. PSG almost doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Matuidi freed Ibrahimovic in midfield near the box, but the Sweden international saw his powerful effort saved by Carrasso. However, six minutes later the Bordeaux keeper was beaten by Moura. Marco Verratti passed the ball to the midfielder, who beat the offside trap and, with Carrasso expecting him to square it to the unmarked Ibrahimovic, Moura rolled the ball calmly past the wrong-footed keeper. Lucas almost set up Ibrahimovic for the third goal with 20 minutes on the clock, but the striker was denied by a reflex save by Carrasso. Ibrahimovic tried again five minutes later with a clever lob, but again Carrasso kept the ball out. Despite the goalkeeper's efforts, it was not enough to stop PSG claiming their third win of the campaign to move them into top spot, albeit potentially only overnight.

Northern Ireland are heading in the right direction

Swansea face Valencia just three days after the Liverpool match in their first fixture of the Europa League group stage. And Dyer is relishing the prospect of a trip to the Mestalla, saying: "Everyone knows who Valencia are. "It's going to be great for us to play a team like them. Obviously Pablo (Hernandez) came from there, and he knows all about the team. "It's going to be a really tough test for us; they've had some quality players, and they are a massive team - especially in Europe." Jonny Evans has set his sights on a place at Euro 2016 after taking encouragement from Northern Ireland's performances in World Cup qualifying. The side may have won just one of their seven matches in Group F, a shock success over Fabio Capello's Russia, but the mood around the team has been positive under Michael O'Neill and two strong showings against Portugal - a 1-1 draw in Porto and Friday night's unfortunate 4-2 defeat - offered further optimism. Hopes of a place in Brazil next summer may have gone but Evans has raised the prospect of a real challenge for the European Championship in France, when the number of participating teams increases from 16 to 24. "The extra teams are qualifying in the next campaign and that gives us a big incentive," said the Manchester United defender. "We need to go back to this campaign, finish as strong as we can and put points on the board. That might have an effect on the seedings and the draw for the next qualifying campaign. "We're in a good place as a squad. It feels like we have things worked out a bit and if we can continue in that fashion there is that wee bit of hope. "There is a good spirit among the squad. You hear people saying 'we enjoy it' but we actually are enjoying it. It's a good atmosphere."
Emmanuel Adebayor has declared that he never considered leaving Tottenham Hotspur and is relishing the competition for places at White Hart Lane. Spurs sold Gareth Bale during the transfer window but have bolstered their squad with a number of eye-catching signings and there are now a host of options for Andre Villas-Boas in attack. Adebayor had been linked with a move elsewhere but he insists he is happy at the club and had no intention of going anywhere. He told All Africa.com: "I decided with my manager, even before the start of the transfer window that I would not leave Tottenham and that's what I did. "I have never thought of leaving Spurs. I am here, my family feels great here and I do not see myself in another city." Roberto Soldado has gone straight into Tottenham's starting line-up since signing from Valencia and Erik Lamela was then bought from Roma in a club-record deal, while Jermain Defoe remains a key a part of Villas-Boas' plans. However, Adebayor is confident that he will ultimately emerge as the first-choice striker under Villas-Boas. He said: "Today I will not tell you that I 'm stronger than Soldado or Defoe or Lamela. "We now have four in the attack, I do not know who ranks first, second or third but I know at the end I will be the first and it is the most important."

offer Nacho Novo a return

"The coaches need time to prepare their teams for the season. Most coaches would like it to be open less time and closed earlier; obviously we will have to have further meetings." Bale is now planning to live up to his billing in the Spanish capital although he has to wait until September 14 for his Madrid debut when Real travel to Villarreal in a game you can watch live on Football Sports 2. Asked about the great players Real have had in the past, Bale said: "There have been the likes of (Zinedine) Zidane and obviously the previous ones, which were a bit before my time, like (Ferenc) Puskas and (Alfredo) Di Stefano. The 'What's The Story?' panel discuss whether Gareth Bale will cope with the expectations after his world record move to Real Madrid. "There are lot of players who have been unbelievable here, world class and legends of the game. Hopefully, I can become the player I want to be, and hopefully be in that league." Bale will be managed by Carlo Ancelotti at his new club and said: "I think he's a great manager, he's won at every single club he's been at, I think. "I've spoken to other players who have had him as manager and it's been nothing short of he's the best manager they've ever had. So obviously that was a factor in me coming, working with a great like himself. "As for the squad, it's an absolutely amazing squad, I've got to work hard to get in the starting XI. There are world-class players here and I obviously came here to be a part of it and to try and get into the starting XI and win trophies."
Kilmarnock could be ready to offer Nacho Novo a return to the Scottish top-flight. The 34-year-old Spaniard had been strongly linked with another of his former clubs, Rangers, but a deal has failed to materialise. Now the former Raith and Dundee forward, who is based in Scotland, could be heading for Kilmarnock after leaving Spanish side Huesca earlier in the summer. "There was a lot of talk about Rangers but the manager never got back to me," Novo told the Daily Record. "I was disappointed to be treated like that but don't feel I need to prove myself to anybody. Kilmarnock have been great with me. "I really enjoyed my first day and was made to feel welcome by everyone. "I have offers and interest from abroad, but my family situation is something I need to consider. I've hardly seen them for three years." Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that he was 'willing to die' for Jose Mourinho but described Pep Guardiola as a 'spineless coward'. Ibrahimovic played under Mourinho at Inter Milan and says the Portuguese was an inspirational coach due to his man-management style and tactical nous. "Mourinho would become a guy I was basically willing to die for," he wrote in his autobiography I am Zlatan Ibrahimovic, excerpts of which have been reported in the Daily Mail. "He works twice as hard as all the rest. Lives and breathes football 24/7. I've never met a manager with that kind of knowledge about the opposing sides. It was everything, right down to the third-choice goalkeeper's shoe size.
